  1. 24/05/1987 – Tulla 1-9 Newmarket 0-5 in Cusack Park
Tulla made a winning start to the 1987 championship defeating Newmarket by eight points in Cusack Park last Sunday. Playing into the elements in the opening half the winners were fortunate to be only two points in arrears such was the dominance of this youthful Newmarket side. In the second half, the move of Mattie Corry to midfield and Jim Power to full back proved decisive. Corry had an outstanding second half as Tulla’s play improved following a stiff talking to at half time by team boss Noel O’Driscoll. Tulla had the opening to points of the second half before Richard McMahon replied for Newmarket. Remarkably this was Newmarket's only score of the second half as Tulla took control with points from Michael Bolton, Corry and Donal Vaughan. Entering the final quarter, Michael Bolton scored the game’s only goal, rifling his shot past Christy Ryan, and from here the outcome was never in doubt. Tulla only managed two points in the remainder of the match and will need to show a big improvement if they are to progress in the competition. For the winners, Denis and Mattie Corry, Mike Dinan, Timmy Hunt, Ml O’Hara, Fergal Culloo and Michael Bolton did best. The team that opened Tulla’s 1987 campaign lined out as follows:
    Denis Corry
Michael Dinan Mattie Corry Sean McGrath
Danny Minogue Timmy Hunt Michael O’Hara
    MA Moloney Fergal Culloo
    Ml McNamara(0-1)Donal Vaughan(1-3)Ml Bolton(1-4)
Denis Meehan Pat McGrath TJ Foley
Subs: Gerry Lynch for Meehan, Jim Power for Moloney
